Is Screen Time Hurting Your Child’s Handwriting?

With increased gadget use, many children are missing out on essential fine motor skill development which is key for neat and confident handwriting. This can affect their ability to take notes, finish written tasks on time, and feel confident in school.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends the following screen time guidelines:

  • Under 2 years: No screen time
  • Ages 2 to 5: No more than one hour per day
  • Ages 5 to 17: No more than two hours of recreational screen time per day (excluding homework)

Here are few simple tips for parents to support handwriting at home:

  • Set limits on screen time and create time for daily handwriting.
  • Involve children in everyday writing tasks, such as grocery lists or thank you cards.
  • Encourage hands-on activities like coloring, building blocks, or puzzles to strengthen hand muscles.

Practice these tips consistently for just 30 days, and you’ll start to see remarkable improvements.
