Helping Your Toddler Navigate BIG Emotions

Toddlers are naturally full of big emotions, from excitement to frustration. Learning to manage these feelings is an important part of their emotional development. While it can be challenging to see your little one upset, there are simple ways to help them navigate these intense feelings.

Here are a few helpful tips for managing BIG emotions in toddlers:

  • Acknowledge Feelings: Validate your toddler’s emotions by saying, “I see you’re upset.” This helps them feel understood.
  • Create a Calming Routine: Whether it’s a quiet time with a favorite book or a few deep breaths, a predictable routine can help toddler manage emotions when they arise.
  • Teach Emotional Vocabulary: By helping toddlers put their emotions into words, like “I’m mad,” “I’m sad,” or “I’m happy” can empower them to communicate their feelings and encourage emotional growth.
  • Be a Calm Role Model: Toddlers learn by watching you. Show them how to stay calm during challenging moments. Your behavior is their blueprint.

At Arise ‘n’ Shine Preschool, toddlers practice these skills every day. The preschool provides a supportive environment through structured play activities, where teachers guide in recognizing and managing their emotions. This sets a strong foundation for lifelong emotional well-being.

To further support the community, Arise ‘n’ Shine Preschool is hosting a family workshop on emotional management for toddlers. The workshop will take place on March 29th and is open to parents in the community. Interested parents can register by calling the counselor at 9840570309.
